Mike Townsend

Mike Townsend | Canada

Mr. Townsend, Supervisor of Music (retired), Grande Prairie School District, Alberta Canada, taught concert band, jazz band, orchestra, for 38 years and community marching band for 45 years. Presently a member of Alberta Band Association, the Vice President of WAMSB International (World Association of Marching Show Bands), Newsletter Editor for PhiBetaMu International, Past President of the Alberta Chapter of PhiBetaMu-MuAlpha, and Regional Coordinator for MusicFest Canada.

Mike’s bands have represented Canada in the United States, Australia, Germany, Sweden, Denmark, Italy, Brazil, China, United Kingdom and Austria. Mr. Townsend is active as an adjudicator and clinician in Canada, Denmark, Spain, Germany, Caribbean, Indonesia, Brasil, Colombia, Poland, Mexico, and Taiwan and has assisted in procuring instruments and establishing band programs in Dominica, West Indies.

Mike has served on the board of Canadian Band Directors Association, Alberta Band Association, Music Alberta and PhiBetaMu International. Mike is a recipient of the Tommy Banks Jazz Educators Award, the Alberta Band Association’s David Peterkin Award of Excellence, the Vondis Miller Legacy Award, the PhiBetaMu International Award of Merit and most recently the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal of Honour.

Keith Beardon | USA

Mr. Keith Bearden, Professor Emeritus, retired from Texas Tech University in May 2003 after 23 years as, director of the Goin’ Band from Raiderland and Associate Director of Bands. In addition, he conducted the University Symphonic Band, the Court Jesters Basketball Band, played trumpet in the Faculty Brass Quintet, taught classes in conducting/music education, and co-directed the Texas Tech summer music camps. Professor Bearden started his career as band director in Jayton, TX. After only one year, he was drafted into the military. He auditioned for the USAF Academy Band and had the honor of serving as principal trumpet in the Academy concert band and brass quintet.

During his distinguished tenure at Texas Tech University, Professor Bearden was honored as Outstanding Faculty Member by Omicron Delta Kappa and Mortar Board, and in 1999 his Goin’ Band from Raiderland received nation’s highest award for collegiate marching bands, the Sudler Trophy, presented by the John Philip Sousa Foundation. He has also received the Texas Bandmasters Lifetime Meritorious Achievement Award. In 2013, he was inducted into the Texas Bandmasters Hall of Fame.

With a heart for helping develop the skills of young musicians, Professor Bearden remains active as a guest clinician/conductor for numerous schools as well as honor groups across the United States. He is very active as an adjudicator in both concert and marching competitions across the country. He serves as concert band and jazz ensemble adjudicator for Festival Disney in Orlando each spring. At the international level, he is a member of the board and is chair of the judges bureau for the World Association of Marching Show Bands. International judging assignments were recently in Hong Kong, Malaysia, Canada, Brazil, Japan, Germany, Thailand, Ireland, and the Philippines. He sponsored band director tours to Japan in 2014, 2016 and 2018 for school visitations and to observe teaching/rehearsal techniques.

Hans-Dieter Buschau

Hans-Dieter Buschau | Germany

In 1972 Hans-Dieter Buschau's musical career started in a flute band that was converted into a marching band, where he played the flute and the trumpet. After having become conductor of the band they became very successful, eventually becoming German Champions. He still is an active musician in wind bands today. He has successfully taken part in various organizations including the Lower Saxony Band Association NMV and former Drumcorps Germany. He became a member of the WAMSB Judges Bureau in 2007. He has been a judge in numerous competitions and is an active clinician all over Germany, France, Denmark, Spain, Poland, Canada, Malaysia, Brazil and the USA and Taiwan including jury assignments in six WAMSB world championships.

Besides his job as a public school teacher in the city of Hildesheim Dieter Buschau is Director of Music in the Lower Saxony Music Association, vice Director of Music in BDMV (German Band Association).

John Meehan | USA

John is the Brass Caption Head and Arranger for the 18-time Drum Corps International Champion Blue Devils Drum & Bugle Corps. Within the Blue Devils organization, John also serves as the lead Arranger and brass advisor for the ‘B’ and ‘C’ Corps programs since 1999.

John has been composing, arranging, and educating marching bands and drum corps since 1992. Through the years, John’s clients have won numerous International, State, and Bands of America Regional titles, been finalists at the Bands of America Grand National Championships, and have been featured in the Macy’s Thanksgiving and Tournament of Roses Parades.

Notable career achievements include lead designer for the System Blue marching brass instrument series, development and production for the Sample Logic sound libraries Fanfare and V.E.T., being a nationally recognized adjudicator for marching band circuits such as Bands of America, and has performed on the movie soundtrack “Monsters University” as a percussionist.

John lives in California with his wife Jackie, their 3 daughters, and two rescue dogs.
